Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 6, 2026  ·  Effective: June 6, 2026  ·  Contact: support@vaaruna.app

Vaaruna ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Vaaruna mobile application ("App") and associated website at vaaruna.in ("Site"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over your data.

We are committed to handling your data responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with applicable Indian law — including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act). Please read this policy carefully. By using Vaaruna, you agree to the practices described here.

The short version: We collect only what we need to run the service. We never sell your data. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information (via Google Sign-In)

When you sign in with Google, we receive:

  • Email address — used to identify your account and send important service notifications.
  • Display name — shown on your public profile (you can hide this in Privacy Settings).
  • Profile photo — shown on your public profile (you can hide this in Privacy Settings).

We do not receive your Google password. Authentication is handled entirely by Google Sign-In.

1.2 Device Identifier

We collect a device identifier (Android ID or equivalent device-level ID) when you install and first open Vaaruna. This identifier is used solely for fraud prevention — specifically, to enforce the "one vote per poll per device" rule that is central to Vaaruna's integrity. It is not used for advertising, tracking, or any purpose other than duplicate-vote prevention.

1.3 Voting Activity

We record your votes on polls — which polls you voted on, which option you selected, and when. This data powers your Civic Score, Rewards Score, rank progression, and leaderboard position. Your voting history is private by default; you control whether any of it is shown publicly through your Privacy Settings.

1.4 Bank / Payment Details (Cash-Reward Claimants Only)

If you reach a cash-reward tier and choose to claim a reward, we collect:

  • Bank account number and IFSC code, or
  • UPI ID

This information is collected at the time of claiming and is used solely to transfer the prize money to you. It is stored with encryption and deleted after the transfer is confirmed, unless you save it for future use.

1.5 In-App Purchase Data

If you purchase a Vote Pack, payment is processed by Google Play. We receive a transaction confirmation and the pack type/amount — we never see or store your card or bank details. Google Play's privacy policy governs their handling of your payment data.

1.6 Advertising Identifiers

The Vaaruna app uses Google AdMob to serve ads in Rewards Mode (watch-an-ad-for-votes feature). AdMob may collect and use your advertising identifier (Android Advertising ID / AAID) to serve relevant ads. You can reset or opt out of personalised ads in your device's Settings. AdMob's data use is governed by Google's privacy policy.

1.7 Usage and Crash Data

We may collect anonymous usage analytics (screens visited, features used, session length) and crash reports to improve the App. This data is aggregated and not linked to your identity.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide the service: Authentication, displaying your profile, recording votes, calculating scores and ranks.
  • To prevent fraud: The device identifier enforces one-vote-per-device integrity.
  • To pay rewards: Bank/UPI details are used solely to transfer cash prizes.
  • To process payments: Vote pack purchases are routed through Google Play.
  • To show ads: AdMob serves ads in the watch-for-votes feature in Rewards Mode.
  • To communicate with you: We may email you about account security, reward status, or important policy changes. We do not send promotional emails without your consent.
  • To improve the App: Aggregated, anonymised analytics and crash reports inform product decisions.

3. Legal Basis for Processing

Under the DPDP Act, 2023, we process your personal data on the following bases:

  • Consent: You provide consent when you sign up for Vaaruna and agree to this policy.
  • Contractual necessity: Processing required to provide the service you signed up for (voting, scoring, rewards).
  • Legitimate interests: Fraud prevention and service improvement, where these do not override your fundamental rights.

4. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored on Supabase — a cloud database platform with encryption at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+). Our Supabase infrastructure is hosted in a secure environment with access controls, audit logs, and regular security reviews.

We implement row-level security policies so that users can only access their own data. Administrative access is limited to authorised personnel and protected by multi-factor authentication.

While we take commercially reasonable measures to protect your data, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password for your Google account.

5. Third-Party Services

Vaaruna uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

  • Supabase — backend database, authentication, and serverless functions. supabase.com/privacy
  • Google Sign-In — authentication. policies.google.com/privacy
  • Google AdMob — in-app advertising. policies.google.com/privacy
  • Google Play — payment processing for Vote Packs. policies.google.com/privacy

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any other third parties for their own marketing or commercial purposes.

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account:

  • Your profile, photo, and bank details are deleted immediately when you delete your account in-app. Your past votes are de-identified from you (name, photo, and any written reason removed) but stay in poll results, so other voters' history isn't disrupted.
  • Bank/payment details are deleted immediately upon account closure.
  • Anonymised, aggregated voting statistics (with no link to your identity) may be retained indefinitely for platform analytics.
  • Transaction records required for tax or legal compliance may be retained for up to 7 years, as required by Indian law.

7. Your Rights

Under the DPDP Act, 2023, and as a Vaaruna user, you have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: Update inaccurate information through your profile settings or by contacting us.
  • Deletion: Delete your account and all associated personal data — use the "Delete Account" option in the app under Settings, or email us at support@vaaruna.app.
  • Withdraw consent: You may withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account. Note this will terminate your access to Vaaruna.
  • Grievance redressal: Contact our Grievance Officer at support@vaaruna.app with any privacy concerns. We will acknowledge your complaint within 48 hours and respond within 30 days.

8. Children's Privacy

Vaaruna is not intended for users under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us at support@vaaruna.app and we will promptly delete the account and associated data.

Users between 13 and 18 may use Vaaruna with verifiable parental or guardian consent, as permitted under the DPDP Act.

9. Cookies & Tracking

The Vaaruna mobile app does not use browser cookies. Our website (vaaruna.in) may use essential cookies for functionality (such as remembering your session). We do not use tracking cookies or third-party analytics cookies on the website.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or via the email address associated with your account. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of Vaaruna after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

11. Contact & Grievance Officer

For any privacy-related questions, requests, or complaints, please contact:

Vaaruna — Privacy & Data Grievances
Email: support@vaaruna.app

We aim to respond to all privacy inquiries within 48 hours and resolve them within 30 days, in accordance with the DPDP Act, 2023.
